What a Tuesday night in the Midlands! The 2026/27 EFL Cup campaign kicked off with an emphatic statement as Keith Andrews’ side put six goals past Birmingham City in a dominant 6-1 victory.
Unlike last season when domestic cup ties often meant paper-thin depth and compromised quality, tonight showcased the true strength of our revamped squad. Even with a rotated starting eleven featuring full debuts for Callum Wilson, Jaidon Anthony, and Jannik Schuster, our Premier League pedigree shone through. A brief ten-minute wobble midway through the first half gave us a slight scare, but once the Bees found their rhythm, Birmingham's backline was completely torn apart.

The Bees signaled their intentions inside five minutes when Mikkel Damsgaard played a quick one-two with Vitaly Janelt off a short corner, floating a cross to Jaidon Anthony, whose flicked header drifted just wide. Just a minute later, the early pressure paid off with the opener. Birmingham cheaply gave away possession in their own half, and Yehor Yarmoliuk was quickest to react, pouncing on the loose ball. Yehor immediately played it into feet for Callum Wilson right at the edge of the Birmingham penalty area. Wilson didn't hesitate, unleashing a first-time strike that took an enormous deflection off a desperation block from a sprawling defender. With Allsop rooted and completely stranded, the ball found the back of the net; a dream start and the ideal way for Wilson to mark his first Brentford start!

Birmingham briefly fought back. Demarai Gray flashed a 25-yard strike agonizingly wide in the 15th minute, and a misjudged corner from Hákon Valdimarsson to the back post nearly allowed an equalizer. After young center-back Jannik Schuster picked up a soft yellow card on his debut while tracking back after being caught in possession, Birmingham capitalized on their spell of momentum in the 28th minute. A short free-kick on the edge of the box was played to Gray, who wasn't closed down quickly enough and fired a hard, low swerving effort through a sea of bodies past Valdimarsson to equalize.

However, the Bees re-established control in spectacular fashion in the 35th minute following a chaotic sequence on the near side of the pitch. After possession repeatedly turned over, Vitaly Janelt took charge, making a powerful driving run into the box and serving up a cross to the back post. The initial delivery was defended up into the air, but the Birmingham backline completely failed to deal with the second ball, heading it only as far as Aaron Hickey standing five yards out near the corner of the six-yard box. Hickey caught it cleanly on the half-volley, sending a beautifully struck strike careening off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net!

Five minutes later, the two-goal cushion was restored off a clever set-piece routine. Following a short throw-in deep in the Birmingham final third, Mikkel Damsgaard played a sharp pass down the wing to an unmarked Jaidon Anthony. Anthony looked up and lofted a weighted cross toward the middle of the six-yard box, where Nathan Collins rose high above the surrounding crowd to firmly knock his header past Allsop and make it 3-1 before the break.

Halftime Score: Brentford 3 - 1 Birmingham City Despite a shaky 10-minute spell midway through the half, the Bees' attacking quality overwhelmed the hosts going into the break.
🎯 The Counter-Attacking Avalanche
Keith Andrews made tactical shifts at the break, bringing Kevin Schade on for Dango Ouattara (pushing Anthony to his natural right wing). Moments later, Mamadou Sangaré replaced Yarmoliuk in what appeared to be a precautionary injury swap as Yehor headed down the tunnel. The Bees should have had a penalty in the 50th minute when a Wilson flick inside the penalty area clearly struck a defender's hand, but play continued.
Igor Thiago replaced Wilson in the 62nd minute, looking to regain confidence after his penalty miss against Tottenham, and the floodgates opened shortly after.
In the 70th minute, a superb defensive job on a Birmingham corner in our own box launched a vintage Brentford counterattack. Vitaly Janelt picked up the cleared ball in our own penalty area and drove forcefully through a gaping Birmingham midfield before spraying a pass in behind down the right-wing channel. Jaidon Anthony latched onto the end of it in full stride and fired a cross into the penalty area. Igor Thiago pulled off an intelligent dummy run, stepping over the bouncing ball and dragging defenders away to leave it for an incoming Mikkel Damsgaard, who controlled with ease and finished coolly at the near post.

Just three minutes later, Damsgaard turned provider from the halfway line, floating a magnificent long ball in behind for Anthony. Sprinting into acres of space down the flank, Anthony picked out his spot and served up his third assist of the night with a pinpoint low delivery across the face of goal, leaving an unmarked Igor Thiago with the simplest of tap-ins to put the Bees 5-1 ahead. A dream start for Jaidon in his first full 90 minutes in a Brentford shirt!

The cherry on top arrived in the 77th minute. A short corner worked between Damsgaard and Keane Lewis-Potter led to a driven pass out to Sangaré at the edge of the box. Sangaré cleverly sat down an incoming defender before lofting a beautifully weighted cross to the back post, where an unmarked Collins comfortably headed home his second of the night to make it six!

The referee showed mercy by blowing the final whistle right at 90 minutes with zero added time. A 6-1 thrashing on the road is the absolute ideal way to kick off our EFL Cup campaign.
After a slight wobble midway through the first half, our Premier League quality and tactical fitness simply crushed Birmingham into submission. The sheer depth on display; bringing on players like Sangaré, Schade, KLP, Kayode, and Thiago off the bench, proves that this Brentford side is built for deep runs across all competitions this year. Our name is firmly in the hat for the next round!
